In the same letter they apologize for not sending to you Das periodische System which is long sold out;[4] but I have «aufgetrieben» a copy of the Chekh translation,[5] and I have mailed a copy of it to you separately this very morrow; perhaps not all the chapters will be of your interest, but I hope Vanadium will.

solo una breve parola di risposta alla tua lettera del 25 ottobre; grazie di cuore per il tuo aiuto nel trovare il giusto titolo per il mio ultimo libro.[2] Con la posta di oggi ho ricevuto una lettera molto gentile, ma molto imbarazzata, dalla Aufbau Verlag, nella DDR: «dopo molte esitazioni», hanno deciso di rinunciare alla ripubblicazione di Se questo è un uomo a causa di un’unica frase del libro, che contiene un giudizio severo sui prigionieri politici: almeno, questa è la motivazione «ufficiale».[3]
Nella stessa lettera si scusano per non averti mandato Il sistema periodico, che è esaurito da tempo; ma io ho «scovato» una copia della traduzione ceca, e stamattina stessa te l’ho spedita separatamente; forse non tutti i capitoli saranno di tuo interesse, ma spero che lo sarà Vanadio.

2Levi aveva aggiornato la traduttrice Barbara Kleiner in una lettera del 29 ottobre 1984: «Cara Signora Kleiner, ricevo oggi, dopo lunga attesa, una risposta da un mio amico, mio compagno di deportazione, che ora è “Landesrabbiner” a Dortmund “Die einfachste, gängigste und ich glaube auch die richtigste Übersetzung dieses Ausspruches ist “Wenn nicht jetzt, wann denn?”... cioè quasi identica a quella proposta da lei». Il testo della minuta è ms. sul retro del dattiloscritto della lettera di Barbara Kleiner del 10 settembre 1984 (cfr. lettera 196, n.6) e si tratta molto probabilmente di una brutta copia. Il documento è conservato nell’Archivio Privato di Primo Levi.
3L’8 novembre, Levi aveva ricevuto da Joachim Meinert, traduttore e redattore dell’editore Aufbau, la notizia del rifiuto della pubblicazione di Se questo è un uomo in DDR. I revisori contestavano in particolare la presenza di giudizi negativi nei confronti dei prigionieri politici (lettera 221). Il progetto editoriale aveva preso forma agli inizi del 1980 (lettera 215) e per l’occasione era stato coinvolto anche l’ex-deportato e scrittore Fred Wander, che avrebbe dovuto scrivere una prefazione (lettera 207) e che in quel periodo fu corrispondente di Primo Levi. 5La versione ceca del Sistema periodico uscì con il titolo di Prvky života nel 1981 a Praga per i tipi di Odeon, con la traduzione di Hana Benešovà e la postfazione di Vladim Hořkỳ.
