Caro dottor Levi,
mi scusi se non Le ho scritto da tempo, infatti ci preoccupavamo di far copiare le foto che Lei mi ha mandato e che le restituisco allegate a questa lettera. Per certi cambiamenti resi necessari dalla programmazione della casa abbiamo dovuto rinviare[1] la nostra edizione di Se questo è un uomo, ma non intendiamo rinunciare al progetto, e ci servono quindi anche le fotografie.[2]
Inoltre abbiamo cercato di raccogliere le critiche che si riferiscono al Sistema periodico, ma purtroppo si è trovato ben poco. A parte le due brevi recensioni che aggiungo[3] furono poche altre delle quali in questo momento o non dispongo di una copia oppure che appaiono ripetitive. Le potrà certamente sembrare un eco ben scarso, ma in realtà esso non significa che il libro non sia letto e recepito dai nostri lettori: è piuttosto un problema della stampa e della critica letteraria poco sviluppata.[4]

Forgive me if I have not written to you in a while; in fact, we were occupied with copying the photographs that you sent us and that we return to you in this letter. Due to certain changes that were rendered necessary by the company’s scheduling, we have had to postpone[1] our edition of If This Is a Man, but we do not intend to give up on the project; we also needed the photographs[2] for this reason.
We have also tried to collect the reviews that refer to The Periodic Table, but unfortunately, we were able to find very little. I am including two short reviews;[3]as for the very few others there are, at the moment I either do not have a copy of them or they seem repetitive. This will doubtless strike you as a meager public reaction, but actually it does not mean that the book is not read and acknowledged by our readers: rather, the problem lies with the press and a rather underdeveloped literary critique.[4]

No enclosures are present with this letter. Nonetheless, Primo Levi’s private archive has two reviews of Das periodische System that were published in East Germany during those same months and that, most likely, are the ones Meinert sent. The first one was published on December 15, 1979 in Berlin’s daily newspaper Der Morgen (an organ of Germany’s Liberal-Democratic Party) with the title Poetisches System [“Poetical System”]. The second, entitled Optimistische Erzählweise [“Optimistic Narrative”], is dated January 26, 1980 and was published in Bauernecho, the organ of Germany’s Democratic Rural Party. Camilla Veneziani is preparing an in-depth study and the results will be included in the doctoral thesis La diffusione, la ricezione e la fortuna critica di Primo Levi nei paesi di area germanofona 1960-1987 [“The Circulation, Reception, and Critical Success of Primo Levi in German-speaking Countries 1960-1987”].
